I am constantly amazed as I observe the human animal. The percentage of people who use their “animal nature” (unthinking tribal herding) as compared to their “human nature” (thinking response living), is constantly on display. I’ve lived in a large metropolitan city for most of my life, so examples and opportunities for observation were constantly on display. One such observation which it appears to be a little less available, but nonetheless present, is the opportunity to observe the pack rat instinct (which has its roots in our animal nature) on display as “humans?” operate motor vehicles.
What do I mean? Have you ever been driving on a two or three lane road and observed how people tend to want to drive in groups? My estimate is that 7 out of every 10 drivers is a pack rat driver. I, as you might have assumed, am not a pack rat driver. I detest the idea and any “thinking” person would realize it is VERY UNHEALTHY!
In fact, even the “rules of the road” training strongly suggests this is not a safe idea. They call it tailgating. When you do not give ample space to the car you are following. They also point out that driving alongside someone is unwise and can cause you to be in the “blind-spot” of the car you are imposing upon.
I have further observed that on any 2 lane road, given 10 cars, at least 7 of them will follow in the “same lane.” Although this natural act is good for those of us who are actual operating our brain cells, it can be annoying when the clutter of “nonthinking drivers” create a moving road block, not allowing those of us who want to, to pass. And passing is a right reserved by law. On the other hand not allowing others to pass is NOT allowed by law. This is what is meant by the highway sign “slower vehicles use right hand lane.”
I further realize in order for us to evolve we need to muster up the courage to wander outside of our tribal camps. Forward-thinking has shaped and will continue to shape the world we live in, thankfully. The worse thing we can do is to assume that “the larger the group of followers are, the more right something is.” Scripture says that we are "LIKE" sheep, not that we are sheep! If we were we would have no use of more advanced braincell activity.
Unfortunately those who believe they are sheep have ceased to rely upon such braincell activity. So what does that have to do with investing? First we need to establish the fact that most people utilize their “nonthinking” instinct EVEN WHEN THEY ARE OPERATING IN A THINKING ENVIRONMENT! That is to say that, even when they are investing, and/or looking to invest they respond to their pack rat instinct.
I need not look any further than to the type of advertising used to draw them, to realize this. The advertising is emotion-based and little is invested in the “thinking” portion the decision. Eventually the company gets around to “crunching numbers with you but rarely is that the drawing point. Company’s spend multiple millions of dollars analyzing how people make decisions and then billions upon billions more capitalizing upon the findings. They have found that we are “nonthinking!” emotion-based animals.
Richard Brodie, best selling author of “Virus of The Mind” and best known as the author of “THE” Microsoft Word program, wrote this: “When the Coca Cola company pays millions of dollars to show young people in bathing suits having a good time drinking their products, they are conditioning you to associate good feelings with their brands. The repetition of that commercial creates association memes in your mind so that you get an irrational urge to buy Coke. It’s possible to override that urge through conscious intention but the urge makes a difference in their bottom line or they would not be spending the money.”
What would happen if someone actually gave you THE FACTS and JUST THE FACTS! What would happen to these industries which capitalize off of your ignorance and fear if your ignorance and fear were removed? It is safe to say that either they would no longer exist or they would have to develop a marketing and operating strategy which respected your knowledge and maturity.
Banks would no longer be able to get away with giving you a “free toaster” and 3/4 of 1% as as return on your money, while they make 15-20% on that same money. They can do this because they “insure” your money. They will say “In these difficult times it’s good to know that someone is willing to guarantee that your money will be safe.” They are appealing to your emotion-based , fear-based nature. And they can guarantee your money because they are doubling your money every seven years or so and only have to give you less than 1% per year.
So what is my point? What if you were given the keys to becoming your own bank? What if you were given the 15-20% return rather than some bank? What if it were guaranteed? What a wonderful world this would be!
I believe it can be a wonderful world. I am not naive in thinking this. No more naive than the person who thought 20 years ago that we could instantaneously see people halfway around the world. Or the person who thought 50 years ago that one day we would be able to carry our phones outside of our homes, and carry them in our pockets. How about the one who believed that you would one day see moving, speaking images in electronic boxes. And lets not forget the one who thought that one day we could actually travel in the air like a bird! No I am not naive, but if I am then I am happily in good company! How about you.
“Forward-thinking!”, “outside the box thinking!”, shapes, reshapes and dominates the world! Hallelujah!
For my part, I respond to numbers. What I like is numbers. Numbers which point to success. Numbers which point to logic. Numbers which say something is wise and advise-able. No slick cool video to draw you in. No elaborate presentation to make you wish you were a part of it all. JUST THE FACTS!
